Before You Give Up on Your Marriage

When a marriage is hurting, it can be difficult to see beyond the immediate pain.

You may be asking:

  • Can we learn to communicate again?

  • How do we rebuild trust after it has been broken?

  • Why do we keep having the same arguments?

  • What happened to the closeness we once had?

  • Can our marriage survive a serious breach of trust?

  • What if my spouse and I don't agree about our faith?

  • Is it too late to save my marriage?

There aren't always quick or easy answers. Problems that have developed over months or years rarely disappear simply because we ignore them. Sometimes one of the most important steps toward healing is simply admitting, “We need help.” And asking for help doesn't mean your marriage has failed. It means you recognize that your marriage matters.

Is Your Marriage in Trouble? There Is Hope.

Every marriage goes through difficult seasons. Sometimes the problem is communication. Sometimes trust has been damaged. You may feel more like roommates than husband and wife. Perhaps the same arguments keep coming back, or one of you has begun to wonder whether the marriage can survive.

If you've found yourself searching “my marriage is in trouble,” “marriage help,” “marriage advice,” or even “how can I save my marriage?” we want you to know that you don't have to face this season alone. At Global Outreach Church in Virginia Beach, we believe in the sanctity of marriage. We believe marriage is worth nurturing, protecting and, when trouble comes, fighting for.

Pastoral Marriage Counseling in Virginia Beach

Drs. Chris and Dahlia Cunningham provide pastoral marriage counseling together, bringing both a pastoral and counseling perspective to couples experiencing difficulties. Dahlia holds a Master's degree in Counseling, while Chris serves as Founding and Lead Pastor of Global Outreach Church.

We also bring something else to the conversation: 39 years of marriage.

We were married on June 20, 1987. After nearly four decades together, we understand that a strong marriage isn't a marriage that never encounters difficulties. Strong marriages learn how to face those difficulties together.

We won't pretend to have a perfect marriage, and we won't expect you to have one either. Our desire is to come alongside you, listen, pray with you, help you identify what may be happening beneath the surface, and encourage you toward healthy, biblical steps forward.

An Important Note About Our Counseling

The marriage counseling offered through GO Church is pastoral counseling and spiritual guidance, not licensed professional counseling, psychotherapy, or mental health treatment. Although Dahlia holds a Master's degree in Counseling, we are not offering services as licensed professional counselors or mental health providers.

There are situations in which a couple may need specialized help beyond the scope of pastoral counseling. When appropriate, we may encourage you to seek assistance from a licensed professional counselor, physician, mental health professional, or another qualified specialist.

Our pastoral counseling is intended to provide biblical guidance, prayer, encouragement, practical marriage support and a caring pastoral perspective as couples work through the challenges they are facing.

“Can You Help Save My Marriage?”

That's a question many hurting spouses ask.

No pastor or counselor can guarantee the outcome of a marriage. Rebuilding a relationship usually requires honesty, willingness, patience and work from the people involved.

What we can offer is a place to begin addressing the issues honestly and prayerfully. Sometimes couples wait until their marriage has reached a crisis before asking for help. You don't have to wait that long. And even if things feel hopeless today, don't assume that today's condition has to be your marriage's final chapter. Before you give up, reach out.

Marriage Advice Before the Wedding

You don't have to wait until your marriage is in trouble to ask for help. Drs. Chris and Dahlia also provide premarital counseling for engaged couples. A beautiful wedding is wonderful. A strong marriage is even better.

Premarital counseling gives couples an opportunity to talk intentionally about areas that can become very important after the wedding, including:

  • Communication

  • Conflict and resolving disagreements

  • Expectations about marriage

  • Finances

  • Family backgrounds

  • Faith and spiritual life

  • Intimacy

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Children and family

  • Building a life together

Our goal isn't simply to help you prepare for your wedding day. We want to help you prepare for your marriage.

Our View of Marriage

At GO Church, we value the sanctity of marriage. We believe marriage is more than a contract between two people. It is a sacred covenant that deserves to be entered thoughtfully, nurtured intentionally, protected carefully and, when it is hurting, given every reasonable opportunity to heal.

Marriage counseling isn't an admission that your marriage has failed. Sometimes asking for help is one of the strongest things a couple can do.

What If My Spouse Won't Attend?

You may be looking for marriage help while your husband or wife isn't ready to seek help. You can still reach out.

While we would love to see both spouses committed to strengthening the marriage, you can begin by seeking biblical wisdom, examining your own responses and asking what healthy steps you can take. You cannot control another person's decisions, but you can decide what kind of spouse you will be and how you will respond during a difficult season.
